It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in the U.S. Thankfully, awareness, early detection, and treatments have improved since October was designated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985. In fact, as Americans continue to adopt more whole-body approaches to wellness, research is proving the benefits of this trend.

A recent study from the Mayo Clinic showed that a Pilates program is the perfect compliment to breast cancer treatments. Researchers found that breast cancer patients who had undergone a mastectomy and participated in 12 weeks of Pilates sessions experienced significant improvements in their shoulder and neck range of motion, quality of life, mood, and body image.

Pilates may be the answer for the breast cancer survivor in your life. A Pilates program will increase strength and flexibility in the shoulder, chest, and back, while helping survivors regain their full range of motion after breast cancer surgery and improving core strength. In addition, a Pilates program will increase self confidence and energy levels, improve sleep, and decrease stress and increase mental well-being.
